Starting the engine
Press the brake pedal .
Press the START ENGINE STOP button Fig. 108. The engine should start.
Diesel engines can take a few seconds longer than usual to start on cold days. Please keep your foot on the brake pedal until the engine starts. The indicator lamp lights up while the glow plugs are preheating.
Switching the ignition on/off
If you only wish to switch on the ignition and do not want to start the engine as well, proceed as follows:
Press the START ENGINE STOP button without pressing the brake pedal. Vehicles without start/stop system*: The rev counter needle will move to the READY position.
To switch off the ignition, press the button again. The rev counter needle will move to the OFF position.
Diesel engines are automatically preheated when you switch on the ignition.
Electrical components with a high power consumption are switched off temporarily while you start the engine.
If the engine fails to start immediately, the starter will be switched off automatically after a few seconds. Try to start the engine again.

WARNING
  • Never run the engine in confined spaces. The exhaust gases are toxic – risk of poisoning!
  • The brake servo and the power steering are no longer operational if you switch off the engine. You will need to use more strength than usual when braking and steering the vehicle. This would mean a greater risk of accidents and serious injury, because you cannot brake and steer in the normal manner. These functions remain active if the start/stop system* has switched off the engine.
CAUTION
Avoid high engine speeds, full throttle and extreme load conditions until the engine has reached its normal operating temperature; otherwise this can damage the engine.
For the sake of the environment
Do not warm up the engine by running it with the car stationary. You should drive off immediately whenever possible. This will help avoid unnecessary exhaust emissions.
Note
  • When starting from cold the engine may be a little noisy for the first few seconds until oil pressure has built up in the hydraulic tappets. This is quite normal and no cause for concern.
  • If you leave the vehicle with the ignition switched on, it will be switched off automatically after a while. Please note that electrical equipment such as the exterior lighting will also be switched off.
