You can use your MMI system as a Wireless LAN (WiFi) hotspot for connecting to the Internet on up to eight Wireless LAN (WiFi) devices. While you are driving, small, light Wireless LAN (WiFi) devices that are not permanently attached to the vehicle can only be operated from the rear seats.
Important: The telephone must be activated Link.
Press the control button for Settings.
Turn the rotary pushbutton to Connections and press the rotary pushbutton.
Turn the rotary pushbutton to Network connection (WLAN) and press the rotary pushbutton. The Network connection menu will appear on the MMI display.
You can select the following settings in the Network connection menu:
WLAN active
The Wireless LAN (WiFi) hotspot is deactivated when the vehicle leaves the factory. Switch the Wireless LAN (WiFi) hotspot on before establishing a connection between your vehicle and your Wireless LAN (WiFi) device.
  • on - to activate the MMI system's Wireless LAN (WiFi) hotspot and use it to establish an Internet connection.
  • off - to deactivate the MMI system's Wireless LAN (WiFi) hotspot. It will not be possible to establish an Internet connection.
WLAN settings
The Wireless LAN (WiFi) connection between your vehicle and the Wireless LAN (WiFi) device (laptop or mobile phone) is encrypted. Before a connection can be established, you must enter the following values/settings when setting up your Wireless LAN (WiFi) device (these values can be edited as required):
  • Access point (SSID) - name of the Wireless LAN (WiFi) network.
  • Encryption type - WEP, WPA or WPA2.
  • Password - depending on the encryption type, a password is generated in the MMI system to encrypt the Wireless LAN (WiFi) connection. This password can be changed. Please select a password that is secure. When using the encryption type WEP the password must be exactly 13 characters long. With encryption type WPA or WPA2 the password must be at least 8 characters (max. 63 characters) long.
  • Discoverability - to switch the discoverability of the Wireless LAN (WiFi) network on or off.
  • Copy settings - to copy the new settings into the MMI system. Subsequently, you must update the changes on your mobile Wireless LAN (WiFi) device.
WARNING!
  • Do not allow the usage possibilities the Wireless LAN (WiFi) hotspot gives you to distract you from watching the traffic – this can cause an accident.
  • Laptop computers and similar devices can only be operated safely when the vehicle is stationary because of their weight; any loose objects can be catapulted through the vehicle in an accident and cause serious injuries. Always make sure that such devices are securely stowed while you are driving.
  • No Wireless LAN (WiFi) devices may be used from the front seats in the areas around the airbags while the vehicle is being driven. Please also observe the safety warnings in the chapter "Airbag system" under "Important safety notes on the front airbag system" in the separate Owner's Manual for your vehicle.
Caution!
Please note that it is your responsibility to take precautions regarding data protection, anti-virus protection and protection against loss of data on mobile devices used to connect to the Internet via the Wireless LAN (WiFi) hotspot.
Note
  • Depending on the Telephone mode selected, there might be restrictions when using a Wireless LAN (WiFi) connection. Select the setting Data services optimised from the Telephone mode menu if you would like to use the system predominantly for data services Link.
  • Should you have problems when trying to establish a Wireless LAN (WiFi) connection, it might help to cancel all existing Wireless LAN (WiFi) connections on your mobile device and to restart the device.
  • You might require a separate mobile phone contract with extra costs before you can use the Wireless LAN (WiFi) hotspot. For more information, contact your service provider.
